This is a very fair question to ask. Over the years we have come to associate carbonated drinks with their unhealthy counterparts available on the shelves. It is only fair to make the assumption that all drinks that are carbonated are unhealthy for you. However, that is not the case. As you might've read on our other blog, carbonation is a naturally occurring phenomenon. According to research from Dr Linda Shaw from the University of Birmingham, dental erosion from carbonated water was still considered very low and at similar levels to what one can expect drinking non-carbonated water.

This depends on person to person. Generally, carbonated drinks don't cause gastric problems and in fact, could aid with digestion. However, people with serious gastrointestinal issues are recommended to check with their physician before consuming any carbonated drink. 

CAN I STAY HYDRATED ON POLKA POP?

Still water and sparkling water hydrate the human body similarly. Interestingly, research published in the National Library of Medicine, USA showed that there was no difference in the hydration levels of the subjects who consumed still v/s sparkling water. [3]

THE VERDICT

“As far as drinking still water versus sparkling water, the bottom line is that you can drink either,” Dr Linge says. “There’s no reason why tap water can’t be as refreshing as sparkling water or vice versa. They’re both something that people can feel good about drinking.” [4]
